Struggling with the Uncertainty of Life After Sport? Here’s How I Took Back Control

Updated: Mar 27

Why Letting Go of Control Changes Everything

But outside of sport, there’s no set playbook. Many of us struggle with transition because we’re used to predictability. In sport, we have a plan, a team, and a goal. If we focus too much on what we can’t control, we get stuck. The key is learning to let go of uncertainty and focus on the areas where we do have power.

Tarek, a recent guest on the 2ndWind Podcast, put it perfectly:

“It’s about control. In an ideal world, we’d have control of everything, but we don’t. I’ve learned to let go of things I can’t do anything about.”

We can’t control how long it takes to land the right job, whether a company hires us, or how others perceive our transition. But we can control our mindset, our actions, and our approach to this new chapter.

What We Can Control in Career Transition

Instead of stressing over what’s uncertain, let’s focus on what’s within our power:

  • Mindset: If we see this transition as an opportunity rather than a loss, we open doors we never expected.

  • Daily Actions: Small, consistent steps—networking, learning, applying for jobs—create momentum.

  • Adaptability: The best opportunities come when we’re open to change. A career after sport isn’t always linear, and that’s okay.

Three Steps to Regain Control

If we’re feeling lost, here’s how we can take back control today:

  1. Shift Our Focus – Instead of worrying about the unknown, set small, achievable goals. Connecting with one new person a week or exploring different industries builds confidence and momentum.

  2. Invest in Growth – Learn new skills, find mentors, or gain hands-on experience. The more we invest in ourselves, the more options we create.

  3. Find a Support System – Surround ourselves with people who understand this journey. Whether it’s former athletes, mentors, or career coaches, the right support makes all the difference.

What’s Next?

We don’t need to have everything figured out today. Letting go of control doesn’t mean giving up—it means focusing on what truly matters. By shifting our mindset, taking small steps, and staying open to new possibilities, we can build a future that’s just as fulfilling as our athletic careers.
