How Can I Use My Voice to Drive Meaningful Change in Life After Sports?

Writer: Ryan GonsalvesRyan Gonsalves

What do you do when you realise there’s more you want to contribute?

I’ve worked with many athletes who want to create an impact beyond their sport. Recently, I caught up with Mikel K Thomas, OLY, a three-time Olympian whose journey has led him from athletics to firefighting and now to athlete advocacy.

Mikel first sought an environment that valued teamwork and service, which he found in firefighting. Over time, he felt a pull toward something different. He recognised that his experience in sport gave him insight into the challenges athletes face, and he wanted to use his voice to create change.

Why Did Mikel Move from Firefighting to Athlete Advocacy?

Like Mikel, I realised that my journey in sport shaped how I see the world. It also made me aware of gaps that need addressing. While I stepped into coaching and career development for athletes, Mikel focused on governance and athlete rights.

Firefighting was a powerful learning experience for him. It taught him about adaptability, teamwork, and serving a greater purpose. However, as he put it:

“My higher mission has always been about helping people. Firefighting gave me purpose, but I knew I had more to give in sport.”

Mikel used his Olympic experience to work with organisations like the IOC, Visa, and Commonwealth Sport. He saw an opportunity to make a difference by amplifying athlete voices and influencing the way sport is governed. His story is a reminder that life after sports can be a continuation of purpose, not an end to it.

How Can Athletes Turn Their Influence Into Action?

Athletes build a platform through competition, media exposure, and their achievements. But turning that influence into something tangible requires intention and action. Here are key lessons from my work and from conversations with athletes like Mikel:

1. Identify the Issues That Matter to You

Mikel focused on athlete governance. For me, helping athletes find clarity in their careers became my mission. Whether it’s mentoring, mental health, or representation, choosing a focus helps you channel your efforts effectively.

2. Use Storytelling to Inspire Change

Mikel has seen the impact of sharing his journey. It has helped him connect with decision-makers and rally support for change. I’ve also found that speaking openly about athlete transitions has helped others navigate their own. Whether through social media, public speaking, or writing, your experiences can have influence.

3. Build the Right Connections

Change doesn’t happen alone. Mikel partnered with organisations that align with his goals. I have collaborated with coaches, former athletes, and industry leaders who share a vision for supporting athletes. Finding the right people and organisations strengthens your impact.

What Steps Can You Take to Start Making an Impact?

If you want to use your platform to create change, here are three ways to begin:

1. Educate Yourself on the Landscape

Learn about the issues affecting athletes today, whether in governance, career transitions, or mental health. Knowledge allows you to take informed action.

2. Engage With the Right People

Conversations open doors. Whether you’re reaching out to mentors, organisations, or peers, surrounding yourself with the right voices will help you grow.

3. Take Consistent Action

Small steps lead to bigger change. Whether speaking out, mentoring, or contributing to a cause, what you do consistently will shape your impact.

Are You Ready to Step Into Your Next Role?

For Mikel, that meant moving into athlete advocacy. For me, it meant building 2ndwind to help athletes navigate career transitions.

Where do you see yourself making an impact? Have you recognised where your skills and experiences can create value?
